Sterling silver is meant to be worn and loved, and with everyday wear it’s natural for it to lose a little of its shine. The good news is that caring for your silver doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few simple habits—like gentle polishing, proper storage, and avoiding harsh chemicals—you can easily refresh your piece and keep it looking beautiful. Below are a few easy tips to help your sterling silver shine bright for years to come.
Polish gently – Use a soft silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish and restore shine.
Clean with soap & water – Mild soap and warm water, applied with a soft cloth, can refresh your piece. Rinse and dry completely. Dawn dish soap works great!
Avoid harsh chemicals – Keep your jewellery away from bleach, ammonia, perfumes, and strong cleaners.
Store with care – Place pieces in a dry, airtight container or pouch when not wearing to slow tarnishing.
Wear it often – Regular wear helps prevent tarnish and keeps your silver looking its best.
If the tarnish has built up more than usual, don’t worry—it can still be easily refreshed.
1. Baking Soda Clean
You’ll need:
Baking soda
Water
Soft toothbrush or your fingers
Dry cloth
This method uses a thick baking soda paste to gently lift tarnish from silver.
How to use:
Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to create a thick paste. Using your fingers or a soft toothbrush, gently rub the paste onto the silver.
This method is best for matte finish pieces only, as it may be too abrasive for polished surfaces.
Rinse well with warm water and dry completely with a soft cloth.
2. Ketchup Clean
You’ll need:
Ketchup
Paper towel
Soft toothbrush (optional for heavier tarnish)
Dry cloth
How to use:
Apply a small amount of ketchup to a paper towel and gently rub the silver until clean. For more stubborn tarnish, use a soft toothbrush to lightly scrub.
For heavily tarnished pieces, place your jewellery in a bowl of ketchup for up to 5–10 minutes. If needed, add ½ cup of vinegar for extra cleaning power.
Rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry completely with a soft cloth.
5. Aluminum Foil Method
This is a great option for cleaning multiple pieces at once. Works great on sterling silver chain!
You’ll need:
Glass dish
Aluminum foil
Baking soda
Hot (not boiling) water
Towel
How to use:
Line the pan with aluminum foil and place your silver jewellery flat, making sure each piece touches the foil. Remove any non-silver elements or stones.
Sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the jewellery and pan.
Pour in enough hot water to fully cover the pieces. You’ll notice gentle bubbling as the reaction begins.
Let sit, gently tilting the pan if needed, until the tarnish lifts (about 5–15 minutes).
Rinse thoroughly in cool water and dry completely with a towel—moisture can speed up tarnishing.
If the dark lettering fades on hand-stamped pieces, simply fill it in with a black Sharpie, then wipe away excess with rubbing alcohol and a paper towel.
